My daughter first started at The Hamlet about 15 years ago enjoying Summer Scheme activities as well as occasional Hamlet Saturdays. Milly enjoyed fun activities in a safe and caring environment supported by well trained staff and it gave me the opportunity to spend quality time with her sister.
As Milly grew up, The Hamlet set up an after school youth club for teenagers with complex needs. Here Milly was able to spend time with her school friends in an out of school setting cared for by experienced staff. Whilst Milly was at youth club some of the mums would get together. Over coffee and cake we were able to offer each other mutual support as well as making lasting friendships.
Milly is in Adult Services now. During the week Milly follows a personalised timetable. This term Milly is enjoying being in a group cooking their lunch, using sound beam technology to make music as well as using eye gaze computer technology to play computer games. The one to one care provided means that staff can accommodate all her needs - whether it’s time in her standing frame or a quiet place to lie down and rest. Milly goes to Out of Hours on a couple of Saturdays each month. The Saturdays are more relaxed. Recent Saturdays have celebrated Thanksgiving and a Mexican festival. The Hamlet charity provide exciting opportunities away from their centres too. For example, Milly has been on an adapted boat on the broads, been on shopping trips with her friends and has even been on holiday with the Hamlet where the staff provided round the clock care.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to the experienced and dedicated staff at The Hamlet. Milly goes off to the Hamlet each day with a smile! The Hamlet have not only cared for Milly but have supported us as a family for many years and I am very grateful to them.
