With the results of the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon Ballot announced recently, The Hamlet Charity has 5 places for the virtual race for anyone who wants to raise crucial funds while making history as part of the world's first 100,000-person marathon.
On Sunday 3 October 50,000 participants will take on the traditional course from London’s Blackheath to The Mall – an increase of more than 7,000 on the previous finisher record – while another 50,000 people around the globe run the 26.2 miles on the course of their choice, any time from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59 BST, in a virtual event.
The Hamlet Charity is inviting its supporters across the UK – and the world – to be a part of it by running to raise funds in its name. If you entered the ballot but were unsuccessful in getting a place then definitely get in touch.
The physical and mental health benefits of being active have been brought sharply into focus during the pandemic, and this biggest-ever London Marathon offers more people than ever before the chance to experience these benefits while raising much-needed funds for charity.
Hugh Brasher, Event Director of London Marathon Events, said: “With the national vaccination programme underway, we are delighted to announce our exciting plans for the world’s first 100,000-person marathon. The London Marathon is the most popular marathon on the planet, with a world record 457,861 people applying in the ballot for a place in the 2020 event, and the incredible success of the 2020 virtual event shows the huge appetite to be part of the world’s greatest marathon.”
Pauline Morgan, Chief Executive at The Hamlet Charity, said: "It's so exciting that we have been chosen to have 5 places for people to represent the charity in this years marathon. I remember when staff member Jen ran for us and she said it was the best experience she had ever had. I really look forward to seeing who will run for us this year."
A chance to be creative
In addition, those taking part in the virtual 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon will be able to be creative with the challenge that lies ahead – something that’s emphasised by the event strapline: Your Run, Your Way.
Ideas for personalising the virtual experience include:
• Being dropped 26.2 miles from home and running back to a hero’s welcome
• Completing each mile with a different running buddy, sharing the challenge with friends and family
• Getting together with a group of friends to walk the 26.2 miles together
• Creating a unique course that visits the homes of friends and family so they can set up outdoor drinks stations for a refuel and catch-up over an energy bar
With loved ones and their community supporting them, participants in the virtual event will be joining many thousands of runners in the biggest-ever celebration of everything the London Marathon embodies – fun, fundraising, fancy-dress and human togetherness, all over the world.
