OLIVER'S STORY – SHORT BREAKS

Oliver's family has shared how The Hamlet has made a lasting difference, describing the support they have received as "life-changing."

The family was introduced to The Hamlet through a Portage worker, who recommended the charity as a source of support. Before attending, Oliver found many everyday environments overwhelming due to sensory challenges, making it difficult to find places where Oliver felt comfortable.

Everything changed when Oliver began attending The Hamlet's Busy Bees sessions.

A Safe and Understanding Environment

Although the family felt anxious before their first visit, those worries quickly disappeared.

"From the very beginning, we felt like we belonged," they said. "There was no judgement. Oliver didn't have to change to fit in—Oliver was accepted exactly as Oliver is."

The family describe The Hamlet as a safe and welcoming environment, where staff understand the individual needs of every child.

"It wasn't just one moment—it was every visit. Seeing other parents going through similar experiences made us realise we weren't alone."

Support That Makes a Difference

The support provided by The Hamlet extended beyond the sessions themselves.

After speaking with members of the team, the family were connected with additional support that made a significant difference.

"That support became a lifeline for our whole family."

The family say this guidance, alongside the ongoing support from The Hamlet, helped them feel listened to, understood and supported throughout Oliver's journey.

Growing Confidence

Since joining The Hamlet, Oliver has grown in confidence and now enjoys attending Short Breaks during weekends and school holidays, with the sensory room being a particular favourite.

"These sessions are so important, especially when routines change. Oliver is allowed to be themself—supported, safe, but not restricted."

The family say that attending The Hamlet has provided consistency, opportunities to develop confidence, and a place where Oliver feels safe to explore, play and thrive.
